All about the UPPER GREY RIVER.

The Upper Grey River is a river of the West Coast Region of New Zealand’s South Island. As the name suggests, it is a stretch of the Grey River, and the name is used for the section between the confluence of the Blue Grey River, Brown Grey River, and Crooked Mary Creek in the Southern Alps and the Upper Grey’s confluence with the Little Grey River 25 kilometres southwest of Reefton.

The river is known to hold high numbers of trophy Brown and Rainbow trout, also has various game animals amongst the grassy clearings and beech forests that meet the waters edge.

On our multi-day adventures you will have the option of a fully catered trip or you can supply your own food.

Relax by the campfire while your passionate guides cook all your gourmet meals.

  3. Day 1 11:00am

Arrive at the river and gear up ready for our 3 day adventure.

Pack all gear and load the boats.

Your guides will deliver a safety briefing prior to boarding the rafts.

  4. Day 1 12-03:00pm

After boarding the rafts we are in for a fun filled few hours of rafting grade 2-3 rapids to our first campsite in the Upper Grey valley, where you guides will cook dinner and desert while you explore or go fishing or hunting for the evening.

  5. Day 2 10:00am

Begin the day with a leisurely cooked breakfast then prepare to leave camp for more rafting adventures downstream.

  6. Day 2 12:00pm

Stopping for lunch at the top of the Gentle Annie gorge we get to stretch our legs before getting into some exciting grade 3 rafting as we head for camp site number 2.

Which is on an island by the way.

  7. Day 2 1-2pm

We arrive at the Island and set up camp. There is plenty of time for a spot of fishing, hunting or relaxing riverside before your guides again get cracking in the camp kitchen.

There is a great swimming hole at this camp if you feel the urge.

  8. Day 3 09:00am

Begin the day with a leisurely cooked breakfast then prepare to leave camp for more rafting adventures downstream.

There is an opportunity for a morning hunt or fish before breakfast or hell even some riverside yoga if you wish.

We depart camp at 10:00am to head into one of the most spectacular spots in the Gentle Annie gorge.

The only access to this section of river is by raft, so count yourself very lucky to float through it giving a perspective that not many get to see.

Towering moss covered walls, slow moving water and the silence makes for a tranquil and calming end to our journey.

  9. Day 3 1-2:00pm

Reaching the end of our trip we disembark, get changed and load up for the journey home.

  10. Day 3 5-6:00pm

We arrive back at our base where you are free to go home and dream about your next adventure.

Oh and leave us a review on Trip Advisor or the likes.

Or maybe just spread the word about your new found love for rafting and the awesome people that you shared the experience with.

    Thanks a bunch.

  • The international river grading system for commercial rafting has been devised to classify rivers by the overall size and technicality of the water being rafted.
  • Grades are from 1-5.
  • Grade 1: small regular waves >0.5 metres. Generally unobstructed passage.
  • Grade 2: Small to medium sized waves and a few obstacles.
  • Grade 3: Fairly high waves 1-2 meters, and the passage may be difficult to recognise from on the river.
  • Grade 4: large, irregular waves, with the passage often difficult to recognise and negotiate.
  • Grade 5: Very difficult rapids, large irregular waves, difficult to negotiate, which require complex, precise, powerful, and sequential manoeuvring to negotiate the rapids.
  • Basically, grade 1-2 is relatively flat water suitable for ages 5 and up, while grade 4-5 is large, exciting and has a greater degree of risk involved.
  • It is recommended you talk to us about your adventure level and the type of trip you are after prior to committing to your adventure.
  • On rivers graded 3 and above, we do require you to be water savvy or be able to swim. We have many awesome locations to jump, dive and drift in the river and swimming is right up there with the experience.
