The Waimakariri is one of Canterbury’s largest and favourite rivers.
Our Waimakariri coast to coast day trip starts in the Arthurs pass region rafting a total of 40km’s following the same route as the annual Coast to Coast adventure race. You will experience amazing gorges and spectacular scenery.
This trip is a full day with around 5 hours on the river until we reach our end location at Woodstock.
After we reach the gorge we stop for lunch then we board the rafts for a leisurely float down stream, giving you the opportunity to take in the breathtaking scenery between the fun rapids that will have the kids fizzing.
We can customise this trip to suit your schedule.
The Waimakariri is a grade 1-2 river so is pretty mellow and perfect for the kids
Flowing from the glacial mountains of the Arthurs Pass National park to then enter the ocean just north of Christchurch after traveling 151 kilometers.

- The international river grading system for commercial rafting has been devised to classify rivers by the overall size and technicality of the water being rafted.
- Grades are from 1-5.
- Grade 1: small regular waves >0.5 metres. Generally unobstructed passage.
- Grade 2: Small to medium sized waves and a few obstacles.
- Grade 3: Fairly high waves 1-2 meters, and the passage may be difficult to recognise from on the river.
- Grade 4: large, irregular waves, with the passage often difficult to recognise and negotiate.
- Grade 5: Very difficult rapids, large irregular waves, difficult to negotiate, which require complex, precise, powerful, and sequential manoeuvring to negotiate the rapids.
- Basically, grade 1-2 is relatively flat water suitable for ages 5 and up, while grade 4-5 is large, exciting and has a greater degree of risk involved.
- It is recommended you talk to us about your adventure level and the type of trip you are after prior to committing to your adventure.
- On grade 1-2 rivers it is ok if you are not water savvy.
- This trip is a good opportunity to get the kids and yourselves into the river for a dip in a controlled environment.
